The Offshore Life: Working on a Rig

Working offshore isn't for everybody. If you're going to be spending an extended period away from home, in a remote location and with hard work to do, then you need to be a highly motivated and capable of dealing with all sorts of challenges. For those who brave the elements working offshore in essential jobs that keep us all supplied with power and goods, the rewards are great.

One of the most well-known offshore jobs is working on oil or gas rigs out in the ocean. Though there is still undoubtedly a lot of hard, dirty and often dangerous work to do there, offshore rigs have changed considerably in the last decade as technology has improved; many jobs are now carried out entirely by machines, which are monitored and activated from behind the scenes.

So, how do you spend your time when you're NOT working? Leisure facilities are extremely good on most rigs, as employers recognise that the remoteness of location easily bores people and prevents them from properly focusing on important work. Therefore, modern rigs have gyms, games rooms, cinemas and more to keep workers entertained.
