Coming Soon: The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race...
One of the most exciting events of its type, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race will soon begin. As suggested by the name, the race will see competitors circumnavigate the globe in eight separate legs, each sailing in an identical yacht.
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race was conceived by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in 1995. Working in partnership with William Ward, Knox-Johnston founded Clipper Ventures, the company responsible for organising and running the race.
The term 'Clipper' in the race name is a nod to the historic tea clippers, small yet rapid cargo ships originating in the 1830s. In 1886, four of these tea clippers held a race from China to London, carrying the season's first consignment of tea that would fetch premium prices. This unofficial race inspired the name of the modern-day race, with the eight competing yachts named after famous tea clippers such as Blackadder, Ariel, Thermopylae and Taeping.
The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is split into eight legs and each yacht is crewed with amateur, trained people. Qualified skippers and other qualified persons lead the teams and crew can sign up for individual legs or for the entire race. In contrast to the Global Challenge the Clipper Race that preceded it, the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race uses boats that are even faster and lighter than their predecessors, with the new route following prevailing winds and ocean currents.
