The Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) will give you a unique opportunity to develop your core skills as a Marine Engineer and broaden your range of experience. Where RFA vessels play a different role to the Merchant Navy’s, our kit reflects this – some of it will therefore be new to you.

The RFA’s vessels are a mix of diesel-electric, slow and medium speed diesel engine propulsion systems. On some ships you will be Engineer Officer of the Watch, while on others, with Unmanned Machinery Spaces (UMS), you will be Duty Engineer for a 24-hour period as part of a rota. As a Third Engineer you will be responsible for the availability, maintenance and repair of a section of the machinery. You will be mentored by the team leader and will in turn be expected to show leadership to the ratings who work with you. Onboard, you will be assisted by a highly professional UK Rating workforce who have been trained to support you in both the operational and maintenance aspects of your role. When repairs are required to ensure a ship stays on station, and meet the needs of our customers, your engineering skills will be vital
