Payroll Administrator Convicted of £120,000 Fraud
A trusted payroll administrator from Hucknall in Nottinghamshire was convicted of embezzling around £123,000 from her employer. Over a period of just under four years from June of 2016 to January of 2020, 29-year-old Sandra Komunska made multiple payments into her own bank accounts by creating fake payee details, invoices and emails.
The fraud came to light during an internal investigation regarding a missing payment to a client, which found that Komunska had credited the amount to her own bank account. This prompted a more detailed investigation, which revealed the multiple payments that Komunska had made to two other accounts in her name.
Komunska pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud by abuse of position. The judge handed down a custodial sentence of two years suspended for a period of 18 months. In addition, Komunska was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and 20 'rehabilitation days'.
Commenting on the case, Nottinghamshire Police's specialist fraud investigator Detective Constable Christopher Underwood said: "Komunska repeatedly stole a very large sum of money over a three-and-a-half-year period. She could have stopped this offending at any time but chose instead to keep stealing more and more from the employers who had put so much time and effort into training her. This was an appalling abuse of trust."
