The World's Largest Yachts

While it is undoubtedly true that size isn't everything, nobody is able to look at a really large yacht without feeling suitably impressed at its sheer scale. In this edition of the Bachmann Group blog, we look at some of the largest yachts that have ever been built.

El Mahrousa
As well as being one of the largest yachts in the world, El Mahrousa (which means 'the protected one') is also one of the oldest, having first hit the water almost 160 years ago in 1865. Built by the Samuda Brothers and originally owned by Egypt's Ottoman governor, the vessel measures almost 146 metres in length. El Mahrousa has of course undergone numerous refurbishments in her time and is today maintained by dedicated members of the Egyptian naval forces.

Though today the venerable yacht spends most of her time moored at Alexandria, she is still more than capable of sailing, powered by three steam turbine engines that allow her to reach a top speed of 16 knots.

Al Said
Built at the Lürssen shipyard and launched in 2008, Al Said belongs to the Omani Sultan Qaboos al Said, one of the world's richest men. The vessel, which stretches to 155 metres in length and has a beam measuring 24 metres, has an aluminium superstructure and a steel hull. Though her cruising speed is 22 knots, she is capable of achieving a top speed of 25 knots.  The massive interior of Al Said can carry up to 70 guests and as many as 154 crew members. Her largest room is a concert hall that can (and has!) accommodated a 50-piece orchestra.

Somnio
Somnio is set to become the record-holder as the world's largest yacht at its launch, which is scheduled to take place in July or August this year. The vessel is so large that it is actually described as a 'yacht-liner' and will feature 30 private residential apartments, the least expensive of which will be priced at a staggering £8.8 million. Built by Norway's Vard Søviknes, Somnio measures 222 metres in length.
