Whether a yacht will be operating in the commercial or private sector, the privacy and protection of its owner and their assets is of paramount importance. This applies at every stage of the complex ownership process from acquisition to disposal and at each and every stage in between.
One of the most effective ways to manage a yacht is to incorporate a limited liability company, which from then on has legal ownership of the vessel. This delivers many benefits, most notably providing reliable protection for things like running costs, berthing, insurance, suppliers, crew contracting and more.
Some of the best jurisdictions to incorporate ownership companies are places like Jersey, the British Virgin Islands and our native Guernsey. Yacht Registration
Choosing a country in which the vessel is registered (referred to as its 'flag state') is an extremely important decision and can influence all sorts of factors from privacy to liability. The world's most highly-regarded (and thus most popular) jurisdiction for this purpose comprises the UK along with its offshore territories and Crown Dependencies, collectively known as the 'Red Ensign'.
