Countdown to Cowes Week 2024!

The little town of Cowes on the beautiful Isle of Wight is set to welcome tens of thousands of visitors later this month as Cowes Week 2024 begins. Cowes Week is one of the longest running sailing regattas in the world and has been held annually since 1826, almost two centuries ago. The only years in which the regatta has not taken place were during World War I, World War II and in 2020 at the height of the COVID pandemic.

The location of the many sailing events that are at the heart of Cowes Week is the Solent, which is the area of water that separates the Isle of Wight from the UK mainland. This area of water is known for its strong double tides, which make sailing especially challenging and exciting.

Cowes Week is usually held in the period of time between 'Glorious Goodwood' (an important horse racing meeting at the eponymous racecourse) and 'the Glorious Twelfth' (the day on which the grouse shooting season officially begins). On occasion, these traditional dates are changed to ensure that the tides provide optimal racing conditions. This year, Cowes Week is set to take place from Saturday the 27th of July to Friday the 2nd of August.

Just seven yachts took part in the first Cowes Week in 1826, competing for the Gold Cup and a generous prize of £100. Today, the world famous regatta now welcomes more than 500 vessels in numerous classes, with as many as 5,000 competitors taking part in the various races throughout the week. These competitors come from many different backgrounds, from Olympic athletes to weekend sailors and everywhere in between.

In addition to those competing, more than 60,000 visitors are attracted to the event as spectators and enthusiasts. Described as having a 'festival atmosphere', Cowes Week is accompanied by all kinds of entertainment offshore, from expert demonstrations to concerts and cocktail parties.
