Maritime UK and National Careers Week

National Careers Week (NCW) is an annual event which, billed as a 'celebration of careers guidance and engagement', will this year run from the 7th to the 12th March. The maritime UK, the umbrella body for the UK's thriving marine sector, will be promoting the industry throughout NCW.

The aim of NCW is to provide a focus for careers guidance activities to young people preparing to leave full-time education, a crucial stage in the academic calendar. Each year, NCW has a different theme; this year's theme is 'All About You: taking control, exploring your options, and believing in yourself.'

Maritime UK brings together the many strands that make up the marine sector, including leisure, engineering, services, ports and shipping. The organisation aims to 'champion and enable a thriving maritime sector' and its Careers and Outreach Programme seeks to raise awareness of the sector and the many careers available within it.

During NCW, Maritime UK will be engaging directly with educational establishments, especially through the Careers Professionals' Network; members of this organisation have been equipped with targeted, industry-produced resources. A wide array of activities have been planned by Maritime UK for NCW 2022. These include:

  • A CPD (Continuing Professional Development) session focusing on careers at sea. The session will introduce careers professionals to several people who currently work at sea including cruise-ship purser Samantha and Portsmouth harbour master Dave.
  • An event for Further Education leaders in which attendees will learn about the maritime sector in London and the tens of thousands of jobs that exist on and around the city's River Thames. The event will take place aboard HQS Wellington.
  • The showcasing of brand new resources and the launch of Maritime UK's new interactive website. A key feature of the new website is a range of virtual tours that help users 'see into the world of maritime'.
  • The announcement of the 'Apprentice of the Year' award at Glasgow's Maritime UK Awards.
