Ports: The Record Breakers!

We're back with another installment of our popular 'Record Breakers' series of blog editions! This time, we're going to be looking at something that unites all seagoing craft from the largest container ship to the smallest private yacht and everything in between: ports. All vessels must at some point return to shore and when they do so they inevitably do so through one of these dynamic, complex and busy places.

World's Busiest Ports
This record is split into two parts:

  • Busiest Port for Containers. Published by Lloyd's List, the authoritative One Hundred Ports analysis report of 2018 named the busiest port for containers as Shanghai in China. The record-holding total stands at a massive 40,233,000 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEU).
  • Busiest Port for Cargo Volume. Turning over more than 900 million tonnes of cargo a year, the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan in China holds this record. The port has an extremely long and rich history, having been established more than a thousand years ago in 738 during the Tang Dynasty.

World's Tallest Lighthouse
Built in 1990 from steel and concrete, the world's tallest lighthouse the the Jeddah Port Control Tower, located in Saudi Arabia. The mammoth construction stands at a towering 133 metres (over 436 feet), with its bright white lights flashing three times at regular 20-second intervals.

World's Largest Shipping Container Logo
This unusual record was set by the Abu Dhabi Ports Group in the United Arab Emirates as a way of celebrating the company's tenth anniversary. To achieve the remarkable feat, staff members carefully arranged no less than 676 shipping containers to spell out the words 'AD Ports Group'.

World's Largest Harbour Port Below Sea Level
When it was officially opened in May of 2018, Turkmenistan's Turkmenbashi International Sea Port became the largest harbour port below sea level. Built at an estimated cost of around £1.2 billion and measuring 1,358,484 square metres (almost 14,622,600 square feet), the port is situated nearly 30 metres (more than 98 feet) lower than average global sea levels.
